Keeping freshwater shrimp is a rewarding experience for aquarists, but one common question that arises is whether Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp can be kept together in the same tank. While both species are popular in the hobby, their care requirements and behaviors differ. I've seen some do keep them together but only one type of shrimp will be thriving while the other is just trying to survive which isn't the best. In this blog, we'll explore the key factors to consider before housing these shrimp together.

Understanding Neocaridina and Caridina Shrimp

Neocaridina Shrimp – These shrimp, such as the popular Cherry Shrimp, are hardy and adaptable. They thrive in a wide range of water parameters, making them an excellent choice for beginners.

Caridina Shrimp – This group includes species like the Crystal Red Shrimp and Taiwan Bee Shrimp. They are more delicate and require specific water conditions, particularly soft, slightly acidic water with stable parameters.

Key Factors to Consider

1. Water Parameters

Neocaridina shrimp prefer a pH range of 7.0-7.5 and a TDS of 150-250 ppm, whereas Caridina shrimp thrive in a lower pH range of 5.5-6.5 and a TDS of 100-150 ppm. These differences mean that keeping them together could require compromising on water conditions, which may stress one species over time.

2. Temperature Compatibility

Both species can tolerate temperatures between 68-74°F (20-23°C), but stability is crucial. Fluctuations can lead to stress, molting issues, and even fatalities.

3. Diet and Feeding

Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp share similar diets, consisting of biofilm, algae, and high-quality shrimp pellets. However, ensuring all shrimp receive adequate nutrition is important, especially in mixed colonies.

4. Breeding Concerns

Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp do not interbreed, which means you won’t have to worry about hybridization. However, Neocaridina shrimp tend to be more prolific breeders, which can lead to population imbalances in a shared tank.

5. Tank Setup & Maintenance

A well-planted tank with hiding spots and stable water parameters is key to a successful shrimp colony. Regular water changes and careful monitoring of parameters help maintain a stress-free environment for both species.

WAIT! There's An Exception!

Amano Shrimp is a Caridina species, but unlike its Caridina shrimp friends, Amano Shrimps are more adaptable to a wider range of water parameters. I have experience in keeping Amano in both harder and softer water with no issues. Though this is true, Amano Shrimps have preferences and thrive within certain water parameters.

Conclusion: Can They Live Together?

While it is technically possible to keep Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp in the same tank, it requires a careful balance of water parameters. In most cases, one species may not thrive as well as the other. For optimal health and longevity, it is generally recommended to house them separately or use different tanks tailored to their specific needs.

If you’re passionate about keeping both types, consider setting up two specialized tanks to ensure the best environment for each shrimp species. Happy shrimp keeping!
